The CHAdeMO standard is a DC fast-charging protocol that originated in Japan. While it was once a primary competitor to the CCS standard, its use in new vehicles has significantly declined in North America and Europe.
As of 2026, the list of vehicles using CHAdeMO is very short, especially for new models:
New Vehicles (2025–2026 Models)
- Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV: This remains the only new plug-in hybrid in North America that offers a CHAdeMO port for fast charging.
- Nissan Leaf (Previous Generations): While the all-new 2026 Nissan Leaf has officially transitioned to the NACS (Tesla-style) port for North America, older inventory and models sold through 2025 still utilize the CHAdeMO standard.
Common Older/Legacy Models
If you are looking at used vehicles, CHAdeMO was the standard for many early EVs:
- Nissan Leaf (All models from 2010 through the 2025 model year)
- Mitsubishi i-MiEV
- Kia Soul EV (First generation, 2015–2019)
- Hyundai Ioniq Electric (Very early versions in certain markets)
- Lexus UX 300e (Earlier models, primarily in Europe/Japan)
- Toyota BZ4X / Subaru Solterra (Japanese domestic market versions only; international versions use CCS)
Important Industry Shift
It is worth noting that the industry has largely consolidated. Most manufacturers have moved to CCS (Combined Charging System) or, more recently, NACS (North American Charging Standard).
- Nissan has officially switched to NACS for its newest models (like the Ariya and the 2026 Leaf).
- Public Charging: While networks like EVgo and Electrify America still maintain CHAdeMO plugs for legacy drivers, many new charging stations are being built with only CCS and NACS cables.
Note for Tesla Owners: You can use CHAdeMO stations if you have a specific Tesla-to-CHAdeMO adapter, though these have become less common since the release of CCS adapters.
